Social Justice in Little Details 📚 🌍

Unfortunately, environmental issues turns into crucial problems of the world that we suffer globally. We,the people , keep denying the fact that the we continue to damage the world with our bare hands. We are selfish beigns who needs concrete evidence and direct exposure to take an action for the sake of world. Since we are the responsibles of the mess, taking care of the world is the duty of every human being . At this point, the teachers who are the pioneers of a generation should be aware of the problems first to pass on the solutions. The themes in the coursebooks can be a tool for a teacher to create an awareness on the issues and help students change their behaviours accordingly to take action for a solution. The examples given below are from the coursebook that I used in my practicum with 5th grade students. Because the book does not contain a material directly support social justice, I gave some examples that can be associated with social justice by teachers. Throughtout my teaching, because global problems are one of my biggest concerns in English language teaching, I tried to mention do’s and don’ts in my practicum for social issues to develop students’ awareness. My biggest gain of being a teacher is changing students’ attitudes towards environment for the better. You know what they say ; Change your mind, change the world. That is why, if I can contribute to even at least one student in being a healthy individual, I would reach my goal.

The “Unit 1/Hello” of 5th grade was basically a unit that associates the countries/nationalities and  self description. In the unit, colorful world maps and children from different countries are illustrated. Since it includes people from other countries and nationalities, it is a perfect chance to impose ideas against racism by mentioning world peace and respect to other people from different origin. The activities such as drama and role play can be used to familiarize other cultures to students.

In addition to this, the activity showed below is very lovely and effecive example for students to develop empathy towards disabled individuals. The detail of using visually impaired person as an illustration allow teacher to mention about the people with disabilities and create awareness about the fact that they are also the part of our society. However, “feeling sorry” is not a way of help to individuals with disabilities. Instead of pity, the respect and empathy should be the primary elements of the topic. Therefore, teachers should consider the fine line between sympathy and empathy.

In the Unit 2/My Town, there is a map that illustrates buildings. By checking the map in detail, the teacher can touch upon the amount of greens in the city to create awareness about pollution which has a crucial effect on global warming. Because global warming is an issue that causes devastation for earth, and especially so in Arctics; it should be emphasized more often.

In the Unฤฑt 8/Fitness, the activity that promotes the love of nature is a perfect material to inform students about the importance and benefits of forests for the earth. In addition to this, the teacher may display some videos for authenticity that can attract students attention and develop awareness about the topic.

Lastly, the Unit 9/Animal Shelter should be completely associated with the social justice since the rate of violence against animals is increasing day by day. Unfortunately, the example given below is a very common activity for the unit of animals. The question “Which animals do you like?” is the biggest mistake of these units. Instead of exclusion, the books should promote the love for all animals without questioning. The ones who answer the question by saying “ I do not like wolves.” today, may be the responsibles of extinct wolves tomorrow. All animals deserve a chance to live and be loved. Therefore, this sensitive issue should be approached with caution by teachers.

Apart from these, the units such as Games and Hobbies, My Daily Routine, Movies, Party Time and Fitness do not have a material to be associated with social justice since they basically focus on grammar and vocabulary teaching. For instance, in “My Daily Routine” unit, a boy’s dailty routine is illustrated. To be associated with environmental issues, a tip such as “Do not forget to turn off the lights” could be used at the corner of the same page to take attention to waste management. My point is, all themes in the book can be adapted to social justice through convenient activities and illustrations if you put your mind to it since they are all based on life.

I really enjoyed reading your blog post Dilanur. Your opening paragraph โ€“ my exact feelings!
The distinction between sympathy and empathy is a very important one. These words are used interchangeably in Turkish though so differentiating them in Turkish might be a good place to begin. As a person who loves animals, I totally agree with you in your comments. I think yes our daily routine can include things we do to save energy and reduce waste. When I wash veggies at home, I donโ€™t let the water go down the drain but make sure it runs into a container so that I can use that water to water my plants. Itโ€™s not really too much effort and probably a very small contribution but if everybody is this much cautious about (not) wasting water then we can at least delay the inevitable.
From the images you presented, the book seemed not very interactive or authentic. It was more your interpretation/modification of the activities that made it address social justice issues, is that correct?. Do you think the book itself is a good tool to serve the same purpose? Your said this is the 5th grade book โ€“ is it a MEB Book? What is your familiarity with it?

Firstly, thank you so much for taking time to read my blog Smile I definitely agree with you about not wasting water. Since "Every drop makes an ocean."(literally : ) ), I also believe that we can delay the inevitable by taking the necessary precautions to save the world.
Yes, it was MEB Book that I used in my practicum as a trainee teacher.  Unfortunately, the book was not an advantageous tool in terms of social justice issues. That's why, I tried to give examples of the activities that can be associated with social justice topics. Because the aim of our education system is basically "passing the test", social justice issues are disregarded, which is actually tragic.

Hi Dilanur,

I really appreciate your adding pictures of the pages you are referring to in your blog. It helps to see what you are talking about. I agree with Deniz hoca that some of the materials are not so visually appealing and that some of the activities are not so interactive. When you used the book, how do feel the students responded to it?

I also really appreciate your attention to detail in looking at these materials. Because you have looked so carefully, you are able to see a lot of opportunities to go beyond the text and address social justice issues, even in units that dpn't have a clear thematic relationship to them. Your ideas for revising the book to improve it with small nudges in the direction of thinking about these issues, like using the corner of the page for a reminder to turn out the lights and save energy, are good and should be directed to MEB for them to consider when they make new editions or new books. You are right, though, that even with the book as it is, it should be possible to find some way to include social justice education in every unit.

In particular, I like how you use the picture in the Fitness unit to raise the importance of forests and a good environment for people's health. It reminds me a concept that is known here in Japan, where I live, called 'forest bathing', which is supposed to help people deal with stress and live healthier lives. Here's a link to a short video that perhaps could be used as teaching material about this topic:

You mention using drama and role play as a teaching techniques for creating cultural awareness. Can you talk a little bit about how you would do this? I'm curious because my partner does a lot of work with drama pedagogy. I'm interested in what ideas people have about using it.

I'm looking forward to coming to Turkey, meeting you and the other participants in this project, and talking about all of these issues.

Thank you for your contributions Mr. Snyder ! Altough the visuality is crucial to take students attention and motivate them for learning, the visuals used in this book are not attractive. Morever, some visuals are used again and again each year which makes it even more boring. That is why, the students lose their attention because of the same and cliche materials.Frankly,I would like to see some new fun characters and clip arts in activities.

I am so glad I learned there is an actual word of my favorite outdoor activity,"forest breathing"! The video gave me lots of ideas such as using forest sounds as a background noise in classroom during a writing activity about environment.Especially,in prewriting stage,I may want my students to close their eyes and image themselves in a forest. It would be an amazing experience for them, I think!

In my practicum,I observed that the students love drama and role play activites in unit,Countries and Nationalities. As we know, there are spesific cultural wealth of each country such as pizza in Italy, dance in Spain, fashion in France etc.Instead of displaying videos about countries only,by bringing some clothes and decoration objects,we can create a perfect and funniest environment for students to learn about other cultures.Depending on the level,we may even want them to improvise or write a dialogue, memorize it and perform a play in classroom. It will definitely create a very positive attitude toward other cultures through experiencing them.Additionally, once in my practicum,I acted like a tourist who visits other countries and explore cultures. The students who are the "locals", introduced their cultures one by one.I still remember the excitement in their faces when I said "I am a tourist". Drama and role play are one of my favorite activities since I have lots of fun. Also, students enjoyment is my biggest concern as a teacher.

Hope to see you soon !

Hi Dilanur,

Thank you for expanding on your use of drama in teaching. it sounds very interesting, including how you put yourself in roles or ask students to create scenarios.

Your idea of having students close their eyes and imagine they are in the forest can be supported by asking them to think about their senses in relation to it -- what do they hear? what do they smell? how do they feel about it?

This, and your comment about the importance of student enjoyment in learning, reminded me of the work of my friend Marc Helgesen here in Japan. Here's a link to website on teaching activities for using positive psychology ann promoting happiness in ELT:

https://www.eltandhappiness.com/

I think you may find some fun activities to adapt for your students there.

Best wishes,

Bill

Thank you Mr. Synder,
I have heard things about "psychology and education", naturally. However, I have never heard of "happiness and ELT" in a sentence which made me really excited because I have been using it informally since the first day of my ELT education. Everytime I think about my self language education process, I only remember joy and fun. That is why, I always attribute my learning to my joy. Because of this, I have chosen the topic of my thesis in relation to my self experiences.(The topic of my thesis is; The Influence of Video Games on Communication Skills) Seeing people working on this surprised me. Thank you for this helpful contribution.
